Lab – The hardware of my testenvironment

In the following article i describe the hardware my testenvironment, which i use for experiments and tests of new Citrix and Microsoft products.

If you are interested in having an own test-system for your home, feel invited to build up a system like this. For any questions, use the commentary field in the end of this article, i will response as soon as possible.

Updates/Upgrades of this system will be listed in the end.

The four harddisks are running in a RAID 1 mode. This is not safe, but very fast!
For protecting the virtual servers against getting lost by a harddisk crash, they are backed up with Quantum on a NAS (Synology Diskstation 713+).

The Synology Diskstation is also used as a NFS-share for ISO- and install-files, personal file-repository (cloudstation), VPN-broker and so on. The harddisks are running in SHR (Synology Hybrid RAID) which works nearly „RAID 0″ (mirroring), but it is more flexible. For further information, take a look here. The Diskstation will be expanded in the next months by a special Synology unit for having more storage capacity and reliability: Synology DX513.

All components in the network support Gigabit LAN, so that the transfer of files and the communication between the services is very fast.
The communication to the internet is 50 Mbit Down- and 10 Mbit Upload… fast enough for working comfortable from outside without going crazy.

Cooler

The system is aircooled and located in my living room, so that it is very important to have a silent system. The original fans of the Lian Li case were replaced by „Noiseblocker BlackSilent Fan L-X1R“, because these fans are much quiter than the original (which were incredibly noisy). Now i hear a light murmur in my back, which is absolutely acceptable for me.

Both processors are cooled by „Noctua NH-U12DO A3„, which are very silent and do a good job. The temperature of the CPUs is constantly at 30°C degrees.

Miscellaneous

I needed a lot of cables for SATA and current supply and used many, many laces to keep the case inside as good as possible free for optimal cooling, which was not easy.
The biggest problem was to find a case for the mainboard. It is bigger than a ATX board, so i had to look a long time to find the right case, where the mainboard fits. I chose the „Lian Li PC-X2000FB„, because it has the correct size and looks stylish!

How much does it cost?

It is not cheap to build up a system like this. I bought the hardware in the end 2011/beginning 2012 and spent a little bit more than 3.000 Euro for the server, nearly 430 Euro for the Synology Diskstation plus 140 Euro for each harddisk. Cables, laces, KVM-switch plus cables, Gigabit-network-switch and network-cables were circa 240 Euro, so that i paid roundabout 4.000 Euro for the whole environment.
Maybe I will buy the expansion unit DX513 for the Synology Diskstation next year (2015), there will come roundabout 900 Euro on top (unit: 400 Euro, five harddisks circa 120 Euro each).

Installed hypervisor

I use the hypervisor „VMware ESXi“, version 5.5 with a free license. I am thinking about to change it to Hyper-V 3.0, for proving the performace of this hypervisor.

Hosted machines

The virtual machines running Windows Server 2012 R2 (standard/enterprise), the clientsystems Windows 7 (x64) respectively Windows 8.1 (x64) licensed by a MSDN subscription and several appliances like Atlantis ILIO, Netscaler VPX, and so on.

Updates

Since yesterday (14.06.2014), i have a new appliance in my environment. A security gateway, bought it at an auction on ebay for 359 Euro:
Astaro Security Gateway 320
It has more RAM than a „normal“ appliance: 4 GB. Nice hardware, totally oversized for my needs, but now i have it. I will configure it the next days!
